I visited the same year Canada remembered the 100th anniversary of its Chinese exclusion act. The gold rush, for mostly worse, lured tens of thousands of Chinese workers in the 19th century under false promises of wealth. By the 1880s, more than half of all Chinese women in California worked, many of them as housekeepers to earn second incomes for their families. From the 1880s, Chinese children were segregated in San Francisco schools until 1971.

The Bruce Lee special exhibition explored Hollywood racism, stereotyping, and unfair payment to visible minorities in the 20th century. It also used Bruce Lee’s marriage to Linda Caldwell as an example interracial marriage before it was federally legalized in 1967. He’s larger than just Keto in the Green Hornet, even as a star he lived the realities of American racism.
