The town of Bulle is in the Gruyère region where the cheese took its namesake. Being near the dairies and pastures that produce the famous Gruyère cheese, the significant Gruyère castle, and the nearby Cailler chocolate factory in Broc, has really stolen the thunder from Bulle.

Bulle has been inhabited since the early Middle Ages and has historically been a location of Catholic religious significance, hence the rather large Église St. Pierre-aux-Liens for a rather small town. It is also the location of several educational institutes including a music school and a hotel management school.

The market place is where cows and produce used to be traded centuries ago, it is now a municipal parking lot when not used as an event space. The market place is the centre of town with the Chapel of Our Lady of Compassion and the Baillival Castle, more commonly known as the Bulle Castle, around its edges.

Even though tourists flock to Gruyère and forego visiting Bulle, both the convention centre of the Gruyère region and the museum of the Gruyère region are located in Bulle. In fact, for must business and administrative dealings, the residents of Gruyère will have to make a trip to the municipal administration offices housed in the Baillival Castle or visit banks and shops along the Grand-Rue of Bulle.
