La Tour Eiffel
This iconic attraction in Paris is a real cash cow for the French tourism industry. It has been the subject of many controversies, scientific experiments, and postcards. Constructed for the 1898 World’s Fair it was supposed to be taken down like all the other exhibits, but it was maintained as a broadcast tower and had the world’s highest toilet until the Empire State Building was constructed in 1931.

Silly little me forgot to make an online reservation, but if you go during non-peak seasons like I did, you’ll have no trouble getting into one of the glass escalators. Within an hour, I found myself shooting up into the sky with the whole city below me. The views were breathtaking and it was very gusty up there. You could pay for the binoculars up there or just bring your own to save yourself €2.
