Located just a little ways from Toronto, Hamilton is a quiet lakeside city with a lively and artistic downtown area. It’s perfect for a morning stop on the way to Niagara Falls with plenty of cafes that are open even on weekend mornings. Although it shares the same name as Alexander Hamilton, it has nothing to do with the famous musical about the American founding father.

If you drive right up to the edge of the lake, you’ll be able to see the Toronto skyline in the distance. To take a picture of it, you’ll need a camera more powerful than the one on the back of your phone, as I found out when my picture turned out poorly-defined.

On your way back from Niagara Falls on a weekday, stop by Hamilton again for dinner on King William Street to avoid the rush hour traffic on the Gardiner Expressway. The traffic is so bad that one Torontonian friend called it the Gardiner Parking Lot as it was just used as temporary car storage until the city traffic cleared up to accommodate commuters. If you fancy a bit of local history, visit the Dundurn Castle and its park, but I didn’t bother.
