At over 1,700m above sea level, Hoher Kasten has the third highest revolving restaurant in the country beaten only by the ones on Saas Fee and the Schilthorn. Located in Appenzell Innerrhoden, which itself is surrounded by Appenzell Ausserrhoden on three sides, which itself is surrounded entirely by St. Gallen, its restaurant sports authentic Swiss cuisine straight from the Alps.
Rotating at one revolution an hour, diners and visitors are granted stunning views of the snowy surrounds. You can look down to see cloud cover with peaks shooting up through the clouds in the morning. Then, in the afternoon, the clouds clear up and you’ll be able to see Gossau and Weissbad quite clearly.
The one thing I really like about this peak is its relative obscurity from the tourism industry. Instead of paying over CHF100 to go up and down Jungfraujoch or seeing the Toblerone mountain for about the same price, I paid just CHF21 for Hoher Kasten and found that there were only around 30 tourists at the top including myself. Go there and enjoy it before it gets too busy.
