Merrickville is one of the most charming villages in the Ottawa valley. Its locks on the Rideau River resemble the ones installed at the Rideau Canal in Ottawa by Carleton University’s campus.
On one side of the river stands the lock station and a blockhouse. The old blockhouse has been restored by the government and is being used as a museum. It is also designated as a National Historic Site.

On the other side of the river stands the Merrickville Ruins. The site used to have a fully-functioning tannery and five mills, including a woollen mill, from the mid-19th century. The formerly important historical site is now designated as an Industrial Heritage Site.
