The famous TV show The Andy Griffith Show was shot here. It had been ten years since I first watched the show and had wanted to visit. It’s a shame that Main Street is flanked by tourist traps and souvenir stores. I would’ve paid money to see a recreated street as it was back in 1960.
The only museums are the Andy Griffith Museum and the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History. There are a couple of murals here and there but there isn’t a museum specifically for the show. Mount Airy should take a page out of Seneca Falls‘ playbook for It’s a Wonderful Life where there are plaques on places in famous shots and a community of volunteers that
