Surrounded on three sides by Germany, Schaffhausen is just a 20 minute drive away from the German exclave of Weil am Rhein. Perhaps the only time a foreigner has heard of the place would be on an IWC watch, where its headquarters are. If you get there by train, you’ll see the three towers on the western side of the city, which I would presume to be part of what used to be an ancient wall.

On the eastern side of the city, a short hike up a hill will get you to the Munot Tower where you have a 360-degree view of the surrounding area. It’s one of the only towers in Switzerland that are wheelchair-accessible with a huge ramp spiralling to the top. I’ve even seen parents pushing baby carriages up to the top.

There are a few nicely painted buildings in the old town area, but I’d recommend you go to Stein am Rhein if you’re a big fan of medieval architectural art. Other than that, the kebab here is generally very good, but still not on par with that of Berlin.
