It’s no secret that I miss Germany and with so many German-speaking communes in Switzerland Basel is hard to miss. It has everything I expected from a typical mid-sized German city and more. German cities can often be boring, with roughly the same street names, churches with familiar names, and brown features on white buildings. Not only is it home to Art Basel, Basel is beautiful in its own right and I have nothing but love for this place.
My favourite building has to be the Basel Münster, a Protestant church built in the 14th century with a Gothic style. From what I heard from the ticketing counter, the towers are over 300 steps tall so challenge yourself and climb all the way to the top to get the best view of Basel. Squeeze through the narrow walkways around the towers to take pictures of what looks like a live miniature below. The view of the River Rhine also allows you to see the colourful tiled roof in detail.

Being along the Rhine reminds me of Köln and Dusseldorf, two equally charming German towns along the lower Rhine that match the elegance of Basel. Walk along the river for a cool summer breeze and turn into the Altstadt to see a spectacular Rathaus like the Rotes Rathaus in Berlin, it stands out from the crowd at Marktplatz and almost begs you to take a photo of it.
The food in Basel is also very authentic southern German cuisine with plenty of potato products and delicious roast sausages, though the beer still needs perfecting compared to their northern counterparts.
