The Brünigpass is known for its view of the Lungernsee nestled between grass peaks. The viewing point at the top is just over 1,000 meters above sea level but parking is very limited, so make sure to get up there early. Along the was, expect to see a 1970’s Corvette, new Mustang GT, Golf R32, Audi RS4, Mercedes S-Klasse, BMW E30 M3, plus a whole bunch of BMW and Kawasaki motorcycles. It’s a feast for the petrolhead’s eyes.

Near the pass’ peak

I brought a folding chair to have an early lunch there while admiring the view. After a heart home-packed lunch, I waked across the pass to the grass knoll and had a quiet stroll in the mountains. If you’re desperate, nature provides plenty of bushes for you to do your natural thing.

If you forgot to pack your lunch, then I can recommend a leisurely drive down road number 4 past the Lungernsee to Sachseln. There’s generous 4-hour parking right at the lakefront and you can enjoy a meal at one of the relatively inexpensive Swiss-style delicatessens filled with local cheeses and dried meats.

Brienzersee

The road is very twisty and buckets of fun, but with two clearly marked lanes even novice drivers can feel comfortable tackling this road. Another plus of this road is that it is usually open during winter with few restrictions with the exception of the most inclement weather.

Difficulty: 2/5, twisty but safe
