Only a half-hour south of Charlotte in North Carolina, Fort Mill was the last place the Confederacy had its last cabinet meeting in 1865. The town has a Confederate Park at one end of he historic area established in 1891 to remember those who died in the Civil War. The town built a bandstand in the park tuned by its residents in 1900.
Its location between Charlotte and Columbia meant a lot of traffic passed through before cars were invented. In 1880, the town installed a water trough for thirsty horses that pulled wagons and buggies. The park used to be an open space for the horses to move around unhitched.
