Located in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, Locarno shares the southern Alps with Bellinzona and Lugano. It is located on the northern shore of the Lago Maggiore, a lake that Switzerland shares with Italy.

The centrepiece of the town is the Piazza Grande where you’re always recommended to walk on the flat paved bits of the plaza instead of risking spraining your ankles on the rough cobblestone. Gelaterias and restaurants are aplenty with lots of sunshine warming up the wide plaza even during colder winter months.

The Visconteo Castle and the Museo Casorella are the main cultural buildings housing historical and archaeological exhibits. When I visited, there were art students drawing the ruins of the old castle, so apparently it is also quite good for practice.

The promenade by the lake is quite beautiful with many old people sitting on the old benches enjoying a picnic while staring at the mountains. Be old for a bit.
