There are three Air Force bases still in operation in Switzerland that operate fighter jets on a weekly basis. Of the three, Meiringen Air Base near Brienz is the most well-known for offering public access and weekly events. On a normal day, you can drive across its runway in a car like using a railway crossing, a gate will close if planes are using the runway.
The training schedule of fighter pilots is published online, both for villages in the area to know when to expect noise and for visitors to go watch the drills. There is a small parking lot right beside the runway where the public are welcome to watch military activity. If you’re lucky, you might even see the aerobatics team practice in their bright red planes!
There are weekly guided tours available, but you have to register yourself at the local tourism office at least a day in advance. The largest open day for Meiringen Air Base is around October every year, when the Axalp show is going on and you can observe live-fire military drills involving fighter jets.
