The state capital of New Jersey was only a small town during the American Revolutionary War when General George Washington defeated the British and their mercenaries several times and lodged his troops briefly in the barracks. It is still a small, sleepy town today with the husks of 20th century factories and permanently shuttered shops.

It was in between the German, Dutch, and British zones of influence in the 17th century. The state museum is free and I recommend a visit to learn about local history. The museum for such a notable state is oddly scrappy. There isn’t much else to do outside the immediate area around the state senate.
