Alberta used to be part of the Northwest Territories so paintings of NWT governors still hang on the walls of Alberta’s Legislature. Its main interior architectural oddity is a water fountain installed to celebrate the visit of Queen Elizabeth II. Its sound echoes around the walls of the rotunda until it focuses on one spot in one of the corridor, it wasn’t designed to be that way.
The chamber has space for 77 members of the legislative assembly and gets reorganized after each election to reflect the number of members from the majority and minority parties. Pretty standard stuff.
What’s not standard was the old mace that was used for half a century. It was made in a hurry so the craftsman had to connect a shaving cup to a plumbing pipe and stuck a toilet float on the other end. The crown is crafted of scrap wood and an old saw. Alberta literally has a shit government.
