I blasted Take Me Home Country Roads as I drove through the capital of West Virginia. It’s true, the houses are made of old rusty sheets of metal, the roads are overgrown with weeds and people paste the confederate battle flag on every flat surface they can find. Mountain mamas are mostly clinically obese balloons, almost heaven is almost too humid, and mines no longer exist but everything is still dusty.

The state police are also incredibly racist. I’ve had two interactions with police on my way into the State Capitol Complex and both interactions began and ended with racist haw-haws. It’s all fine by me if those obese white cops would keep it among themselves at a bar, but not while on the job interacting with the public.

There’s a public market with an outdoor section that sells fresh fruits, vegetables and houseplants and an indoor section with wine, packaged goods like homemade jam and a tourist information centre. There’s also a monument to Shoney’s Big Boy burger chain, which opened its first location in Charleston in 1947. The parkette has since been demolished and replaced by a furniture store, but the restaurant empire now spans 2,500 locations.
