Located conveniently along the I-80, Iowa City is a must-see afternoon stop for travellers along the route. Right next to West Branch, which houses the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library, Iowa City used to be the seat of government in the state of Iowa. The Old Capitol Building is now home to a free history museum with the Senate and House of Representatives rooms preserved in its original form.
Surrounding the history museum is the campus of the Iowa State University built in the same style as the Old Capitol Building to preserve architectural coherence. The downtown area has plenty of on-street parking for mopeds as students like to use two-wheeled alternative to the slow campus buses in sunny summers. Although it’s just two by two blocks in size, you can spend a whole two hours walking around downtown and treating yourself to a nice large plate of fried chicken.
If you got time, Cedar Rapids is just a half hour north and worth a visit to their Czech and Slovak heritage area.
