Despite having lived in Germany before, I haven’t actually heard of Lindau until a French colleague told me about its beauty when I was working in Geneva. Having already been to 56 Swiss cities in my first six months in Switzerland, I decided to give Lindau a try.

Reformed (left) and unreformed (right) churches.

In terms of geography, Lindau is an island on Lake Constance just an hour away from Friedrichshafen where Zeppelins once departed for America. It has a large railway station for an island of its size as it is a terminus for many regional routes. It is connected to mainland Germany via a railway jetty that also has a pedestrian pathway on the side and a small bridge for vehicular traffic.

Lion and Lighthouse

The first thing to see once you get off the train is a “gateway” to the lake formed by a statue of a lion on one side and a tall lighthouse on the other side. If it wasn’t foggy the day I went, I could’ve seen Switzerland and Austria on the other side of the lake.

There is one main cobblestone street where most of the main stores and restaurants are located and an intricately painted town hall is on the opposite side of one of the small squares along the street. A couple of cafes on this street has special offers for coffee with an apfel strudel, I highly recommend getting on of those with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side.
