The valley of the River Wupper, that’s what its name means. The little town is very narrow and stretches along both banks of the river. Once an industrial and mining powerhouse it is now a quiet town of less than half a million people. There are plenty of neo-classical buildings constructed during the town’s industrial heydays. The town square in front of the Hauptbahnhof has a classical fountain and a modern shopping mall, more than enough to keep you entertained while waiting for your next train.
The main attractions include the hanging train and the public park at its western terminus (Vohwinkel) that displays parts of old hanging trains to explain how it works. The Von der Heydt art museum is also in town and highly recommended. You won’t be able to spend a full day here, so you can head off to other regions in the west such as Köln, Bielefeld, and Münster to spend the rest of your day.
